I’d like to take a moment to celebrate the non-breaking space. This poor, oft maligned html entity has been subject to systematic abuse over the long history of the web. It’s so often used to crudely muscle-in some extra white space that I feel it’s original purpose has been neglected.
In a medium that has so many typographic limitations (even with the latest CSS techniques we don’t have proper kerning or decent control over letter-spacing, let alone the ability to freely choose a typeface for body copy) we need to embrace the little triumphs of typographic rightness if we are to remain sane. And being able to control exactly where that oh-so-long company name wraps brings me a moment of quiet joy.
