Last night was also the opening reception for ClearRx. They did a good job of designing an exhibit about information design, and I actually learned quite a bit about the design that I hadn’t from reading the many short articles about it. It was interesting that she didn’t actually design the packaging shape of the bottle–target hired an industrial designer for that. A ton of work went into make sure there was room on the label for all the different pieces of information that different states require, and making sure that label and all the collateral would fit on a 8.5×14 sheet that a standard pharmacy could print out. It still amazes me how bad traditional prescription bottles are, and how long they’ve existed without someone redesigning them like this. ClearRx shows how the best solutions are usually the ones that seem the most obvious in hindsight.
