Pitchfork is dead on. I mean, they had me at “Frog Eyes,” but the Arcade Fire/Modest Mouse connection does sound a little too much like an indie rock red giant about to implode into a black hole of hipster backlash.
But, to paraphrase, don’t believe the anti-hype. This is a great album. Yes, it could be sometimes described as a David Bowie fronted Arcade Fire performing Modest Mouse/Frog Eyes mash-ups, but it’s so much better than the sum of it’s parts.
